Sex Education for Teenage Girls

It is important your teenage girl understands her sexuality as she starts to spend more time with her friends and less with you. She may come under peer pressure for various reasons in her early teenage years, but knowledge is everything and she can counter this pressure. This article aims to give some sex education tips for teenage girls to equip them with accurate information about the facts of life.

A girl’s body really starts to develop in her early teens, but she may not understand the biological and emotional changes she is experiencing. Her friends will be going through the same experiences of course - but at different stages - and whilst they can share their feelings with your daughter, they might not be giving her accurate or safe information. There’s a trust issue here and it is important that she listens to and implements your advice, and not that of her immature and inexperienced friends.

The first – and most obvious – aspect of sex education for teenage girls is menstruation and her first period. For most parents it is difficult to strike a conversation but it should be compulsory and timely. Don’t leave her with the burden of having to interpret or make sense of the experience without any help or support. She should be expecting it and know what to do when it occurs.

Accurate Information

So don’t be afraid to hold back any information; they need to know everything, because they may hear conflicting and inaccurate information off their friends at a later date. They’ll be able to take this with a pinch of salt and ignore it. But they need to hear the right information from you first.

So explain the mechanics of the period; i.e., what is it, and why and when it happens. They’ll need to know how to deal with it, so discuss different types and brands of sanitary towels and pain management techniques. They’ll need to understand that the period is totally natural and isn’t something to be frightened about; this may or may not be an issue.

The Menstruation cycle can be a complex process to explain to a young teenage girl, but it is important that she understands her body. You could explain that her body gives signals of which phase of the cycle she is going though at each particular time and she should recognise and understand these signals.

Emotional Changes

Aside from the biological changes that your daughter is experiencing, she will – understandably – be experiencing some emotional changes as well. This is very normal, as the body starts producing new hormones which affect the mood and the disposition of the girl. You will need to discuss the potential problems and tension which these mood swings may cause. This simple guide on sex education for teenage girls should give you a proper grounding on how to handle a potentially tricky situation.
