Oral sex is a low risk
sexual activity that involves genitalia stimulation of sexual partner by
throat, mouth, teeth or tongue. Few years back, it was regarded as an
unmentioned activity until the researchers find out that most of the sexually
active people go for oral sex. Oral Sex is less risky than the other sexual
activities such as unprotected vaginal sex and unprotected anal sex. But it
can’t be considered a safe option; there are many health risks of oral sex. For
instance through oral sex one may transmit sexually-transmitted diseases (STDs)
such as herpes and syphilis.
Oral sex performed on females refers to cunnilingus and when performed on males it is termed as 'fellatio'. Oral stimulation of anus is referred to as Analingus.
Many studies are been conducted to find the exact risk involve in oral sex. The results of different researches are seen to largely vary from each other. Some have reports about 8% risk of HIV transmission in oral sex while the others have reported only a minimal level of 1%. This deviation is because researchers face certain hindrances in getting accurate information. Owing to the reason that oral sex is only a part of sexual activities, it is difficult to find out whether oral sex is responsible for HIV transmission or not.
According to the British Government’s Department of Health, oral sex is safer than the vaginal intercourse. The expert group of Department of health reported some risk factors of oral sex:
In some of the cases HIV is reported to be transmitted during oral sex. However, as far as HIV infections are concern oral sex is probably much safer rectal or anal sex.
If the sexual partner has bad hygiene then risk of oral sex largely increases.
Mouth ulcers and other oral problems also increase risk of infection. Till now there is no research that supports the fact that use of mouthwashes can reduce the risk of infection.
In cunnilingus, if a woman is menstruating then the risk of infection increase
If a man avoids ejaculation during fellatio then risk is minimal.
With fellatio there is risk of transmission is to the receptive partner. Here the infected pre-ejaculate fluid can find its way via mouth. Besides this if infected blood from the bleeding gums gets in contact with certain cut or sore on penis it can transmit infection. However, fellatio oral sex complications are many times lesser than the vaginal or anal sex.
